Room Design Project

Section 1:  Vision/Design Board (via Canva)

Select what kind of a room you want to design.  This can be any room...your ideal bedroom, a library, a kitchen, a gaming room, a study...etc.

Create a vision board (or, we can call it a design board) on Canva.
  1. Log into Canva.  If you aren't already using Canva, you can log on with this invite link (make sure to use your school ncmcs.net email address)
  2. To use a template (which you are allowed to use for this project), find 'template' along the side menu.
  3. Search for 'vision board' in the templates, and choose one that you would like to use.
  4. Create a vision/design board using at least 10 images.  These can be images you find on Canva, or search on Google, or anywhere else you can find them.
  5. Have fun with your design.  Play with different tools.  Try adding grids and frames.  Use layers when images overlap (you can use the 'position' tool to move images backwards or forwards.
  6. Once you have finalized your vision/design board, click the 'share' button and select download.  The PNG file type is often the best quality.  Save your vision/design board to the theatre folder on your Google Drive, and submit it on the Canvas assignment.

Section 2:  Real Life Floor Plan

Using Pencil/pen and paper, create a floor plan for your room project if you were actually able to build this in real life (a floor plan is a view of a building or room as viewed from above).  Your room should have at least:
  • 4 walls
  • 1 door
  • 1 window
  • 4 pieces of furniture

NOTE:  Everything here is 'at least.'  You don't have to design this traditionally.  Your room have be an octagon with 8 walls.  Be creative, have fun.

Sketch our your idea room on a floor plan.  Label the door(s), the window(s), what the pieces of furniture are, and anything else that you think should be labeled.  This can be a rough sketch. It doesn't have to beautiful, but it does need to be able to be understood by someone else.

Take a clear picture of your 'real life' floor plan and save it to your google drive.  Then, upload this picture to Canvas for this assignment.

Section 3:  Theatrical Floor Plan

Create an additional sketch of floor plan.  Convert your 'real life' floor plan into a ground plan for the stage.
  • Decide where the audience is viewing your stage from.
  • Remove at least one wall so the audience can see.
  • Cheat out/angle the other walls so the audience can clearly see from all seats.
  • Rearrange the furniture if needed so the room could work on a stage (and so the audience can see).
  • Take a clear picture of your 'stage' floor plan and save it to your google drive.  Then, upload this picture to Canvas for this assignment.

Section 4:  Choose your white model pieces to create your scale model

Look through the 4 different 'Parts' linked below.  Each link contains multiple different options for a scale model set.  Decide which pieces you are going to use for your scale model.  Mr. Faw will print these off for you on card stock.

For this assignment, create a google doc with what you want printed off.  Each request should include:
  • Which Part (1-4)
  • Which pdf page in that document (NOTE:  this MUST be the pdf page, not necessarily the number at the bottom of each page)
  • How many copies of that page you will need.  NOTE:  If there are four chairs on the page I am printing, and you need four chairs...please don't include 'x4' on your request.  This is only requesting multiple pages.
  • Build a Set Part 1:  Scaled Flats

  • Build a Set Part 2:  Flats, Doors and Windows Flats, Backstage Flats

  • Build a Set Part 3:  Stairs, Beams, Columns, and More

  • Built a Set Part 4:  Scaled Furniture (Living Room, Dining Room, Beds, Bathroom, Kitchen Cabinets and Sinks, Appliances)

Section 5:  Finished White Model

Once you finish constructing and attaching your white model, take (at least) 4 good pictures of your finished model.  If you have access to a good quality camera (or phone with a good camera), use this to take the picture so it is higher quality.  Upload these pictures to Canvas (you can either upload the pictures individually, or put them all on a google doc or presentation).

NOTE:  While this is called a 'white model,' you are welcome to color, paint (etc) if you would like.

As much as possible, stage the pictures to have good lighting and a nice background.  Soon, these pictures will be uploaded to a digital portfolio.
