Class Show Assignments

Select your area of design for your production (Costume, Makeup, Scenery, Lighting, Props, Sound...if the production calls for it).  You may have more than one person working together on design.

  • Final Portfolio Assignment
Final Portfolio Project should be a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation that documents the work you have done throughout the entire year.  This portfolio should highlight each show you worked on, 3-4 pictures per show is enough (although you can include more if you like), and a caption for each show explaining your work.
Final Portfolio should DEFINITELY include:
* Theatre 1 and 2 class shows: (both fall and spring) final production pictures as well as program listing your name.  Pictures and programs are online under the gallery
* NCTC Play Festival:  If you did significant technical work on the festival (building, painting, lighting, costumes, etc), include final production pictures and program.  Both are online under the Gallery
* Musical:  Final Production pictures and program, highlighting work you did for the musical.  Pictures and program online under the gallery.
* Senior Show:  If you worked on the senior show, final production pictures and program, found online under the gallery.
Final Portfolio MAY ALSO include
* Relevant design documentation you did for shows (sketches, drawings, models, light plots, etc)
* Pictures of build and/or strike, documenting your work on shows.
* Pictures/programs from shows other than Pinecrest Players productions you have worked on this year (including Judson Theatre, Imagine Youth, Symphony, Choir/Band/Orchestra, etc)

Treat this portfolio as a professional presentation for a job in a professional theatre.  Assume that the person you're presenting to has an understanding of theatre, but not Pinecrest Theatre.

Finally...please collaborate on this. Share pictures (rehearsal pictures, build/paint pictures, etc). Theatre is a team sport, we all work together to pull the show off. While there is no minimum length to this assignment, this should be well organized and professional.

  • Mid Term Portfolio Assignment:  Due  (uploaded to Canvas)
On your website (if you haven't yet created your website, you need to do so), document the work you have done this semester.  You can organize it how it makes the most sense to do for you (if you want to create a page specifically for this semester, if you want to make one page for 'directing' and one page for 'costume design', etc).  However, this should be organized and professional.

Mid Term Portfolio should DEFINITELY include:

* Theatre 1 and 2 class shows: final production pictures as well as program listing your name.  Pictures and programs are online under the gallery
* NCTC Play Festival:  If you did significant technical work on the festival (building, painting, lighting, costumes, etc), include final production pictures and program.  Both are online under the Gallery

Mid Term Portfolio MAY ALSO include
* Relevant design documentation you did for shows (sketches, drawings, models, light plots, etc)
* Pictures of build and/or strike, documenting your work on shows.
* Pictures/programs from shows other than Pinecrest Players productions you have worked on this year (including Judson Theatre, Imagine Youth, Symphony, Choir/Band/Orchestra, etc)

Assume that the person you're presenting to has a basic understanding of theatre, but not Pinecrest Theatre.

NOTE: Even if your portion is difficult to show in pictures (sound design, backstage) still show pictures from the show and explain your role. EVERYONE should also include an image of the program, documenting their involvement with the play. Pictures from the show AND images of the program are posted in the Gallery section of the website.

Finally...please collaborate on this. Share pictures (rehearsal pictures, build/paint pictures, etc). Theatre is a team sport, we all work together to pull the show off. While there is no minimum length to this assignment, this should be well organized and professional, to show off to a college.

  • Assignment 6:  Due  (uploaded to Canvas)
Pre-Show and Show Night Preparation
For this assignment, document the preparation you are doing for your show, the near-final aspects to be pulled together, as well as documentation from backstage of the show night itself.

Depending on your aspect of design, exactly what this looks like will be very different. Ideas to include are:

* Light Cue Sheet/Sound Cue Sheet (notes written on the script for the cues as well), pictures of yourself at the light board, sound board, spotlight
* Final Props List, pictures of the backstage props table the night of the show
* Finalized set designs (and pictures of the actors on the set pieces)
* Finalized costume designs (and pictures of the actors in costumes)
* Crew List (who will be doing what for your show)
* Show Pictures (the ones posted on the website).  NOTE:  These show pictures should not be the only thing you have for this assignment, but they can be a part of it.

For this assignment, do not feel that you have to focus only on your aspect of design. If you have had a hand in multiple areas, please include everything you've been working on.

  • Assignment 5:  Due  (uploaded to Canvas)
For this assignment, show evidence of your work thus far, of your process. For example, you could include...

Set Design: Pictures of you building platforms, a sketch of the stage design, and a paragraph describing what you have done so far.
Costume Design: Pictures of the costumes you have already pulled and organized for the show, pictures from websites of the costume pieces you still need to buy, and a paragraph describing your work so far.
Props Design: (same as costume design)
Sound Design: Links to some of the songs you plan to use, songs or sound cues you have created yourself in Garage Band, and a paragraph describing your work so far.
Directing:  Any of the above that you have worked on, as well as pictures of your rehearsal in progress.

These are only examples, get creative and show evidence of your work so far.

  • Assignment 4:  Due  (uploaded to Canvas)
Research Assignment:  Look around online (or in books), and find at least 8 pictures that could help you in your design process.  (For example, if you're designing scenery for a play set in an apartment, find pictures of actual apartments that would fit the time period).  You are NOT looking for pictures from plays, or from another production of your play...you are looking for actual research (architecture, clothing from the correct time period, etc).

Under each picture, type a short (1-2 sentence) description of how you think you could incorporate these into your play.

  • Assignment 3:  Due  (uploaded to Canvas)
Read through your script, focusing on your area of focus.  (For example, if you are focusing on props...) Go through the script and take specific notes, making sure to include:
*  What is the prop (or costume, or scenic element, etc)?
*  What page number is it on?
*  What actor(s) uses it?
*  Does the script describe the prop in any further detail?
*  Any other thoughts/ideas you have about this prop?
You can also take notes on places in the script that might not specifically reference a prop (or costume, or scenic element, etc), but you think would work well there.
You can format this however it works best for you (some people like to create this as a spreadsheet, some people like to type it out in bullet points, etc).  However, make sure it is typed and professional in appearance, as this will be going in your portfolio.

  • Assignment 2:  Due  (uploaded to Canvas)
Initial Reflections:  After choosing your area of focus (lighting, sound, costuming, scenery, props, etc) and after a read through the script, (and if you have time, initial discussions with the director), type a couple of paragraphs on your initial design ideas for your play.
What does it look like in your mind?  Don't worry about how practical it is right now, or how you're going to make it happen on stage.  Think big!

  • Assignment 1:  Due (uploaded to Canvas)
After reading through the scripts to get a good feel for them, tell me which show you would most want to work on, as well as what design job you would like for it (costumes, scenery, props, lighting, sound, etc)
If you are a director, tell me who you would like to work on your show.
NOTE:  No promises that you will be assigned to the show/job you request, but this is a good starting point for me.

Organization:

Start off talking, what does each designer want to start working on?  What does each show need?  Do this before the shows are cast and before people are assigned to shows (who wants to play with lighting, scenery, costumes, etc).
