Honors Theatre Syllabus
The honors theatre program is heavily performance based. We will be studying acting styles from different periods in history by performing monologues, scenes, and plays. We will also explore playwriting, dramaturgy, improvisation, and will spend some time working with technical theatre as well. There are very high expectations for memorization, rehearsal ethic, preparation, and performance, as this class carries an honors weight.
Needed Materials: Script/Pencils/Chromebook: Come with these every day.
Clothing: Wear or bring clothes and shoes that you can work in on stage every day (think stretching, basic yoga). If you cannot do an activity due to your clothing, you may be docked participation points.

Course Guidelines/Requirements:
- Electronics: Cell phones, music players, or other electronic devices are not to be out during instructional time. Violation of this policy will result in the device being turned in to administration for parent pickup.
- Food/Drinks: Food, candy, chewing gum, and drinks are not allowed inside the auditorium. Water is allowed, as long as it is in a bottle with a leak proof lid.
- Restrooms: Students must sign out when they leave, sign in when they return from the restroom, and take the hall pass with them to the restroom. Failing to do so is considered skipping.
- NCTC Play Festival- As a class, we will be rehearsing for and participating in the NCTC High School Play Festival for the first part of the school year. We will have rehearsals and performances outside of class time (both before and after school). More details and a schedule will be available shortly.
- Honors Theatre Fair Share- To help cover costs of production (rights, scripts, costumes, scenery) and play festival (travel, registration fees, food) we ask that each student be responsible for a 'fair share.' This fair share will be no more than $150, specifics and payment information can be found here. NOTE: This fair share is not meant to keep students out of the class, nor the play festival. Parents, if this fair share will cause a burden, or you need to set up a payment plan, please contact us at [email protected].
- Senior Show Eligibility: To be eligible to participate in the senior show, students are required to maintain an 80% average in Honors Theatre, to keep up with all portfolio/product based aspects of the senior show, and to have successfully completed the Junior Project. More details can be found on the Pinecrest Players website.
- Late Work: The majority of assignments are submitted through Canvas. Assignments will be accepted late, with a 5 point deduction per day late, not going below a 50. However, assignments close 2 weeks after they are due, and the grades becomes a zero. Students will need to schedule a one on one meeting with the teacher, and parents may need to be contacted, for assignments to be accepted past two weeks late.
- Communication: The teacher may communicate with students through email, Remind Messaging or text message.
- Play Reviews: Students should attend two theatrical productions during this school year. These may be community theatre productions, professional shows, other high school's shows, etc. The plays should not be Pinecrest Players productions, nor should they be seen during class time or as a part of a class. After, students will turn in a typed review of each show on Canvas.
